An aspirational leader is sought to drive change and advance the academic enterprise of the Division of Geriatric Medicine. The ideal candidate will be an internationally respected scholar and visionary leader with sophisticated interpersonal skills. They will meaningfully engage the academic leadership of the University and the affiliated teaching hospitals to build strong cross-department and cross-discipline collaboration, bridge diverse groups, strengthen capacity in research across disciplines, and provide strong mentorship to trainees and faculty at all stages of career. The individual will establish an overarching vision and strategic direction for the Division.
The successful candidate:
- Will have the ability to work within an interdisciplinary team at multiple sites.
- Demonstrate academic and clinical leadership experience as well as strong organizational skills.
- Should demonstrate academic success in leading research programs and developing junior faculty.
- Must be licensed to practice medicine in Ontario and hold (or is eligible for) certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
- Must be eligible for or be a member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association.
- Must be eligible for a University of Ottawa academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or higher.
Additional formal training in Geriatric Medicine and fluency in both official languages (French and English) are considered strong assets.
The Division Head is accountable to the Chair/Head of the Department in fulfilling the mission, vision and goals of the Department, the Hospital(s) and the Faculty, in particular as they relate to the Division.
The Division Head holds a joint appointment as the Head of the Division (academics) and the Head of the Division (clinical services).
The Division Head is part of the leadership team of the Ottawa Hospital/University of Ottawa’s Department of Medicine. As such, the Division Head will work with the hospital(s) and University’s leadership. This is a combined role including clinical services, administrative responsibilities and opportunity for research activities.
The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is the largest academic health center in Canada with over 1,100 beds, approximately 12,000 staff and annual budget of over $1.3 billion. It also has the distinction of being the Capital’s primary health services provider covering a health region of hospitals and care providers spanning over 20,000 km2. The Division of Geriatric Medicine is a Division within the Department of Medicine partnered with the University of Ottawa, The Ottawa Hospital, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Bruyère Continuing Care and Montfort Hospital.
The Division of Geriatric Medicine is a leader in medical education at the undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD levels with a specific focus on assessment tools for dementia and delirium. It is considered an International leader in research and education on the association between driving and cognitive decline. The Division is also involved in a wide range of clinical research activities including frailty, cardiovascular disease, the impact of dementia on the caregiver, and gender related issues of aging. The Division of Geriatric Medicine, in collaboration with the Regional Geriatric Program, provides a coordinated comprehensive range of specialized Geriatric interdisciplinary assessment services. Patient care settings include: inpatient (including formal liaison services with the Trauma and ED services), and outpatient care at The Ottawa Hospital, rural and regional clinics covering Eastern Ontario, the GEM (Geriatric emergency management) program, outpatient and inpatient consultation services at the Montfort Hospital and Clinical involvement with the Ottawa Hospital’s geriatric psychiatry service. The position of Division Head is a five-year term appointment with the possibility of reappointment for one additional five-year term.
The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP/APP) as well as honorariums/stipends.
