Description

The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC) is a 70-bed hospital that provides tertiary and quaternary specialized care and rehabilitation for patients with physical disabilities and provides inpatient, outpatient and outreach services for patients with amputations, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, strokes, chronic lung disease, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, musculoskeletal dysfunction, and communications disorders.

The University of Ottawa Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Partnership is looking for a dedicated family physician/internist to provide clinical services as a Most Responsible Physician (MRP) Hospitalist for TOHRC inpatient units.

All billed services are retained by the provider. Visits are remunerated on a fee-for-service model under OHIP. This position does not require overhead costs.

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Physiatrist–in-Chief, the Hospitalist will ensure the general medical care of inpatients admitted to TOHRC. The patient load is between 20-25 beds when at full capacity. Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Be available to treat patients from 8AM to 5PM weekdays
  • A daily internal cross coverage system is in place to allow physicians to do other clinical work or activities after their routine rounding during work weeks.
  • Admission history and physical - focus on medical aspects for care
  • Physical examinations
  • Ongoing general medical care;
  • Manage medical issues on patients on a daily basis
  • Discharge medication prescriptions and discharge summaries prepared day of discharge
  • Work closely with admitting Physiatrists and PM&R trainees on the unit
  • Consult Physiatrist on all patients admitted for Rehabilitation direction and care
  • Collaborate with Rehabilitation Team
  • Attend Interdisciplinary rounds
  • Attend Family Conferences
  • Day-time on-call availability to manage emergency medical situations
  • Provide additional coverage during other hospitalists’ vacation

TOHRC has a hospitalist model that covers Monday to Friday 8am – 5pm, 3 weeks on, 1 week off. A daily internal cross coverage system is in place to allow physicians to do other clinical work or activities after their routine rounding during work weeks.

Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree
  • Appropriate Certificate in medical practice from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
  • Registration in good standing with the CMPA
  • License in Ontario (or be eligible for licensure)
  • Bilingualism (French/English) would be an asset.
